Cooking - Tips from the kitchen of Chef Julie

July 2006

Make your kitchen more user friendly

Is preparing a meal in your kitchen a daunting prospect? As a mobile chef, I work in different kitchens every week, and see why people avoid cooking. Here are some tips that might make your cooking experience more enjoyable.

  1. Buy the biggest cutting board you can fit on your countertop, and use it. Larger cutting boards make chopping a lot less frustrating.
  2. Put a damp towel under your cutting board to keep it in place. There is nothing more aggravating than a slipping cutting board that moves each time you cut.
  3. Find your knife. You don’t need a whole set of expensive knives- find an all purpose knife that works for you, and use it for almost everything. Try a global santuko style knife, or a furi. Your knife should be comfortable in your hand, well balanced, and sharp. Your knife should be your friend... be one with your cooking tools!
  4. Sharpen your knives. You may not even realize how dull your knife is, or how much easier cutting could be with properly maintained tools. Not only do your ingredients get bruised and/ or mutilated before they reach the skillet, you have a much higher chance of cutting yourself with a dull knife. Try the furi knife sharpening system available at “Great News-” it is easy to use, reasonably priced, and
guaranteed. You might even start to enjoy slicing and chopping!
  5. Organize your space. Are your spices near your stove? Is your silverware easily accessible? Is the placement of your equipment well thought-out and easy to navigate? Spend more time enjoying your meal and your company, and less time in frustration searching for your spatula.
